Park 224.6974046343957 GERMAN WAR CEMETERY The GERMAN WAR CEMETERY in Costermano sul Garda was opened in 1967 and is run by a German association that recovers soldiers who died in the war abroad, buries them and looks after their graves. On the terraced slope of a hill, divided into sections by heather hedges, lie more than 22,000 German soldiers who died in the Second World War, moved here from burial places across northern Italy. At the entrance, a small museum with interactive stations retraces the events of the Second World War, from the Rome–Berlin Axis to the Allied advance in Italy, with first-hand accounts from people who lived through and suffered the war. At the highest point of the site, with a fine view over the Gulf of Garda, a plaque at the foot of the large iron cross remembers “the victims of war, injustice and persecution”, so that they may be “a warning for peace and friendship between peoples”.
